Hearing Protectors
Q. What are hearing protectors?
A. Hearing protectors either are plugs
of various shapes and sizes that are inserted into the ear
canals or muffs that are placed over the ears. In either
case, their job is to reduce the intensity of sound that
reaches the ear so as to protect the ear from potentially
damaging noise.
Q. When should hearing protectors be used?
A. Hearing protectors come in many shapes, sizes,
and prices. OSHA recommends that workers exposed to levels
over 90 dBA on an eight-hour time-weighted basis use properly-fitted
hearing protectors if their exposure cannot be limited administratively
or by a change in their work situation. Exposure during
recreational activities that result in exposure to loud
sound, such as hunting, target shooting, woodworking, or
even lawn work may require the use of hearing protectors
so that hearing is not damaged.
Q. How are hearing protectors rated?
A. Hearing protectors are graded by their noise
reduction rating (NRR). The larger the number, the greater
the amount of protection that is provided.
