Someone in the family with
a hearing loss
Q. Should I Shout?
A. No, this distorts your voice. Face your
family member and talk in a normal or slightly louder speaking
voice.
Q. Can people with hearing loss tell the direction
of sound?
A. Some hearing-impaired people cannot
tell the direction of a sound or voice. This is especially
true when the two ears are very different or not balanced.
When your family member calls you and asks "Where are
you?" state the specific room instead of answering
"here".
Q. How should I repeat myself when I am not understood?
A. A hearing-impaired person has difficulty
in understanding words. Your voice may be audible, but separate
words may sound blurred. Rhyming words such as: cat/cap,
bread/thread, etc. are extremely difficult to distinguish.
When your family member does not understand you the first
time you say something, do not repeat the same words. Instead,
rephrase the sentence so that you may be more easily understood.
Q. Is there depression with hearing loss?
A. Untreated hearing loss is linked to depression,
anxiety and social isolation in seniors. Studies find that
denial, cost and vanity are biggest barriers to use hearing
aids. Read
